Actualmente se encuentra trabajando en una investigaci\u00f3n que tiene como objetivo desarrollar herramientas con ayuda de la inteligencia artificial que permitan predecir, desde el momento del diagn\u00f3stico, si una paciente con c\u00e1ncer de mama desarrollar\u00e1 met\u00e1stasis. En base a esto se\u00f1al\u00f3: <em>&#8220;La idea de las herramientas que estamos desarrollando es ayudar a los pat\u00f3logos y a los onc\u00f3logos a generar esta etapa en el diagn\u00f3stico de las personas&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La motivaci\u00f3n detr\u00e1s de su investigaci\u00f3n parte de una realidad cl\u00ednica: <em>&#8220;Para m\u00ed es muy importante ya que como contexto m\u00e1s de 10 millones de personas fallecen anualmente por c\u00e1ncer en el mundo, y la gran mayor\u00eda lo hace no a causa del tumor original, sino de sus met\u00e1stasis. Entonces es s\u00faper importante que este diagn\u00f3stico se pueda realizar porque mejora la calidad de vida de los pacientes.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> A pesar de ello, hoy no existe ning\u00fan examen, ni gen\u00e9tico ni de otro tipo, que permita estimar esa probabilidad con base cient\u00edfica. Por esta raz\u00f3n el estudiante trabaja precisamente para atender este problema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para lograrlo, desarrolla dos l\u00edneas de investigaci\u00f3n en paralelo. La primera es un modelo de predicci\u00f3n de interacciones prote\u00edna-prote\u00edna (PPI) que, a partir \u00fanicamente de secuencias de amino\u00e1cidos, estima si dos prote\u00ednas interactuar\u00e1n entre s\u00ed. Comprender esas interacciones permite mapear los procesos bioqu\u00edmicos que ocurren al interior de las c\u00e9lulas y detectar c\u00f3mo se alteran en enfermedades como el c\u00e1ncer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La segunda l\u00ednea trabaja sobre muestras de tejido tumoral de mama  en donde a partir de datos de expresi\u00f3n g\u00e9nica de todo el tejido, Diego desarrolla m\u00e9todos para separar esa informaci\u00f3n seg\u00fan tipo celular: tumor, fibroblastos, otras poblaciones del microambiente y as\u00ed identificar se\u00f1ales que indiquen si el tumor tender\u00e1 a contenerse o a diseminarse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para entrenar estos modelos, <strong>Diego Bustamante<\/strong> utiliza dos fuentes de datos. Una es una base de datos p\u00fablica con millones de secuencias de prote\u00ednas anonimizadas. La otra proviene de <strong>Environ <\/strong>, que aporta informaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica de pacientes que tuvieron c\u00e1ncer de mama, en donde ya tienen una corte retrospectivas y prospectivas, aprobadas por un comit\u00e9 de \u00e9tica y con consentimiento informado de las participantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;Entonces, desde ese punto de vista, los datos ya est\u00e1n pensados con el consentimiento de los pacientes; a m\u00ed me llegan anonimizados y, de hecho, ya se han realizado tesis doctorales basadas en esos estudios.
